42nd Street is a 1933 Musical film, set on the famous Manhattan street of that name, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The script was written by Rian James and James Seymour, from the novel by Bradford Ropes. The film was directed by Lloyd Bacon with choreography by Busby Berkeley. The songs were written by Harry Warren with lyrics by Al Dubin.

Julian Marsh (Warner Baxter), an successful Broadway director, produces a new show, inspite of his poor health. The money comes from a rich old man, who is in love with the star of the show, Dorothy Brock (Bebe Daniels). But she doesn’t reply his love, because she is still in love with her old partner. At the night before the premiere, Dorothy Brock breaks her ankle, and one of the chorus girls, Peggey Sawyer (Ruby Keeler) tries to take over her part.

The film is a fast-paced, backstage movie musical, one that changed the film musical forever and was so financially successful that it saved Warner Bros. Studios from bankruptcy.
