Committee up-date and May meeting
Written on May 10, 2011 by ken
Dear AMMPT members and industry friends,
This is to advise of the impending departure of Vice President Harry Smith when he leaves to take up permanent residence in New Zealand in the near future.
Registrar Ross McDonald has agreed to take over Harry’s position as VP of both the WR branch and on the national committee till the AGM in October, at which time elections for the next two year term will take place.
Also as the ER branch is now functioning, ER President Keith Kanaar is automatically included as a member of the national Committee.
A reminder our regular May meeting will be held at a special time between 6 pm and 8 pm on Wednesday 18th at the usual place – the RSL hall in Bentley. The theme is “BRIDGING THE GENERATION & TECHNOLOGY GAP”.. Please note that it will begin at 6 pm – not at 5 pm as listed in Newsreel. This is due to the time needed to set up the display.
As you will be aware, this event is designed to entertain and inform the younger generation and those who do not have any idea of how the moving image industry originated. Host for the evening will be our Education / Exhibition officer Richard Rennie who will provide an entertaining explanation and demonstration of the very early moving image devices.
AMAZING ANIMATIONS
Come and see how the moving images on cinema and television began. See the illusions made by a Thaumatrope. See moving pictures in a Zootrope and a Phenakistoscope. And see the birth of the movies in a Mutoscope. Then create your own animation for a Zootrope; and make a Thaumatrope to take home. Exciting hands-on activities.
This will be followed by a selection of classic cartoons and other appropriate films from our library.
The 6 pm start will enable the very young ones to have something to eat before they arrive, although there is planned to have some treats available for them at the venue. Our usual refreshments arrangements will be available for the adults.
If you intend to bring your friends, family, and the grandkids, it is essential the organisers know beforehand to arrange for seating, refreshments, treats, etc. We would hope to have a good response from members, to justify the effort that is being put into the display. Please RSVP by May 13th to 9310 3377 or email ammpt@iinet.net.au to advise the organisers of the numbers in your group who can be expected to attend. A gold coin donation would be appreciated from non members and the public
Early History of the Moving Image
There will also be a public demonstration at 2pm on Sunday May 22nd 2011, at the Old School Library Community Hall on the corner of Kitchener and Curtis Roads in Melville, Western Australia.
AN EVENING WITH DIANNA HAMMOND
AMMPT members have been invited to attend an entertaining evening featuring Dianna Hammond. Dianna began her extensive and varied professional career as Weather Presenter and children’s host on the Super Flying Fun Show during her six years with STW Channel Nine in Perth . Since then she went on to perform internationally, with her singing and musical entertainment taking her to 26 countries, at Australian events and for the British military. Now based in Sydney and retaining a close involvement in the television industry, Dianna would love to return to live in her home state, but while her current hectic business life continues, she is resigned to staying in Sydney for the immediate future. She anticipates meeting up with some of her “old” television colleagues at the Perth event.
Dianna is the President of the NSW branch of the Australian National Flag Association, from which WA Branch President and AMMPT Associate member Bert Lane has extended an invitation to AMMPT members to attend the local event. This has been scheduled for the evening of Wednesday June 1st. and to be held in the Perth CBD. As the ANFA will be supplying refreshments at the venue, it is essential that only financial AMMPT members RSVP by May 27th to 9310 3377 or email ammpt@iinet.net.au There will be no charge for this event, but members will be expected to wear their name badges for identification to gain entry. As with any volunteer based organisation, I would expect the ANFA would appreciate any donation to their cause you may decide to give.
That’s about all for now.
Regards,
The Prez.
